Finding her path to helping people more holistically

future of wellness naturopathy

While studying nursing in Melbourne, Sarah Paterson worked part-time at a pharmacy. She was shocked by how much medication people took and how little they knew about it. It inspired her to consider an alternative career path.

“I switched from nursing to psychology,” Sarah explained, “I wanted to understand how people think, make decisions, and how we can change our patterns and behaviours. But, after a year of psychology, I knew I wanted to help people more holistically. I decided to enrol in naturopathy. I didn’t realise how many people would question my decision, but I’m confident I’m on the right path.”

Sarah is about to begin her final year and says she has loved every subject, especially the ones about plants. “My Nan had acres of garden and always grew veggies and herbs, so I was surrounded by plants growing up. From my first herb class at Endeavour, I have loved learning about the medicinal qualities of plants. There is so much to know!”

In late 2019, Sarah launched her business, Lavendar and Co Botanicals. “I’ve always wanted my own business,” she said. “When I was a child, I would set up pretend shops and sell flowers. With Lavender and Co Botanicals, I’ve started by making and selling a range of hand-blended boutique herbal teas and by sharing my health and wellness knowledge online. I aim to help people look and feel their best, from the inside out.”

“In the future, I’d like to have an integrated health clinic, where everyone works together. I think it’s important that patients have easy access to different healthcare practitioners in one place, without needing a referral somewhere else,” Sarah said. “But I’m going to start with online consultations from home, with a particular focus on gut, skin and mental health. I’ve seen other women start this way and then buy their first shop or space.”

“At Endeavour, we had a subject about establishing and managing a practice. It’s useful because it helps you think about what you want to do when you finish. We also have the opportunity to practice our skills in student clinic under the full supervision of some incredible lecturers. That gives you confidence. I look forward to having clients come to me for help, knowing I have the knowledge and skills to make a difference in their lives.”
