The retired teacher who kneaded more

future of wellness remedial massage

Meet Ian McLean. He’s a retired teacher-librarian. He’s also a remedial massage student at Endeavour College. We first noticed Ian when he started checking-in at the Sydney campus weekly on Facebook and updating the public with what he learnt. His positivity and enthusiasm intrigued us so we decided to have chat and find out what drew him to remedial massage.

Ian is used to a room full of bubbly and noisy children. He’s a blogger, an artist and an avid Star Trek and science fiction fan. He’s a sociable person who loves a chat and meeting new people, which are great skills to have as Remedial Massage Therapist.

His passion for remedial massage all started with receiving a few remedial massages over the years. “What if I retired and can’t afford massages anymore?” was a thought that crossed his mind. Ian also enjoyed that with remedial massage, your work can travel with you. With some guidance from a friend, he sought out a remedial massage course. “My friend advised me that Endeavour College is introducing a Diploma of Remedial Massage, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect! For me it was meant to be – a convenient location, doing what I love and studying near to where I was studying as a trainee teacher in the 70s, it’s almost full circle.”

So why not sit back and enjoy retirement?

Ian explained he could happily stay at home and fill his time up with day-time television, reading and working on his latest novel manuscript, however since studying a Diploma of Remedial Massage, he’s connected with like-minded individuals, learnt something new and also receives regular massages as part of his learning. He says he feels inspired by his teacher, Anthony Turri during every class.

Ian loves the small, intimate classes at Endeavour and says it’s not so much of a student/teacher atmosphere, its more adults and professionals learning and working together in what they feel passionate about.

In the future, Ian wishes to convert part of his house into a massage studio where he’ll be able to see clients in his own space and to his own schedule.

Ian inspires us to never stop learning and feeling inspired. As long as we’re given the right tools and information, you can turn your knowledge into whatever you want, whether that’s working in a health spa or retreat, running your own business supporting elite athletes or the ability to heal those close to you with your own hands. And that’s quite a powerful skill to have.
