About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dedicated and thriving team as our Head of Department in Social Sciences on a full-time basis.

Reporting to the Director of Education, you are an engaging and visible senior academic leader who will guide and oversee course development and delivery, select educational resources, assessment design and course evaluation to ensure quality, consistency and currency of courses nationally within professional and regulatory guidelines.

Your key responsibilities will also include:

  • Managing and leading the Social Sciences department to maximise the quality of teaching, course materials and academic administrative functions
  • Student management to ensure a high level of academic integrity and adherence to academic policies and to address student concerns and grievances while supporting academic success
  • Providing high-level management of academic operations, being a collaborative and active member of the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) and facilitating high quality interaction with support departments to ensure efficient and effective workflow in course delivery

About you

You’re an expert in the field, have a strong understanding of social sciences nationally and internationally, and see the bigger picture and where it’s moving. You have experience in counselling and/or psychology along with management and leadership experience and have completed or are currently undertaking a PhD in a relevant field (counselling focus of the PhD research project is preferred). Also having the following will see you well placed for success:

  • Demonstrated academic excellence, evidenced by an outstanding contribution to teaching at a tertiary level and research in the discipline represented
  • Proven experience in the development and review of curriculum and assessment materials at Bachelor level in line with regulatory and professional guidelines, development of social sciences curriculum is preferred
  • Industry engagement through work and professional/association activities
  • Publications in academic journals and being research active will be highly regarded
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders including industry and the wider community
  • Ability to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach and work cooperatively with other organisational units and staff to achieve the College mission and objectives
  • Evidence of successful leadership including a proven ability to lead, team-build, manage, mentor and develop staff (academic leadership is preferred)
  • Commitment to high ethical, personal and professional standards
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Evidence of an active role in the maintenance of academic standards and in the development of educational policy and of curriculum areas, within the discipline
  • Holds current membership of an appropriate professional association
  • Graduate Certificate in Higher Education is desirable
