Tropical turmeric popsicles

This homemade Tropical turmeric popsicle recipe is the perfect way to cool down on a hot day or simply as a refreshing (and healthy) dessert. Not only are they easy to make, they are packed with ingredients that contain healing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, healthy fats, protein, vitamins and minerals, making these popsicles a highly nutritious yet delicious and refreshing snack or dessert. Health benefits

Turmeric: This wonderful spice has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years, all thanks to its active constituent, Curcumin. Curcumin is widely recognised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which is helpful in reducing pain, inflammation and improving physical function in conditions such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. Curcumin also improves insulin sensitivity in metabolic syndromes and reduces cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease.

Ginger: Closely related to Turmeric, Ginger is another amazing spice that has been used for many medicinal purposes throughout history. There are at least 115 constituents found in both fresh and dried ginger, with the major constituent found in dried ginger named Shogaols. Ginger reduces pain and joint swelling in osteo and rheumatoid arthritis through its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has also been found to be extremely effective against alleviating symptoms such as nausea and vomiting in motion sickness, pregnancy and to alleviate nausea during chemotherapy treatment.

Hydrolysed Collagen: A popular supplement on the market, collagen is the main structural protein in humans and animals, found in abundance in ligaments, bones cartilage, tendons, blood vessels, and the gastrointestinal tract. A major role of collagen is to provide structure to several of these tissues, which provides rigidity and integrity. Hydrolysed collagen contains high amounts of many amino acids ­– in particular hydroxyproline, proline and glycine. Studies have shown that the ingestion of collagen due to the abundance of these amino acids provides many health benefits such as reducing pain, inflammation and joint stiffness in conditions such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, improving the intestinal lining thereby reducing inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases, increasing skin hydration, and reducing the formation of deep wrinkles.

Mango, pineapple, passionfruit and banana: All of these wonderful fruits contain ample amounts of Vitamins C, E and A, Niacin (B3), Pantothenic acid (B5), Pyridoxine (B6), Riboflavin (B2), Thiamine (B1), folate, potassium, copper, magnesium and dietary fibre, adding significant nutritional value to this recipe. Pineapple also has the additional benefit of containing bromelain, an enzyme found mainly in the core of the pineapple which aids in digestion by breaking down protein.

Tropical Turmeric Popsicles

Prep: 5 minutes | Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • ¾ tsp dried turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp dried ginger powder
  • 1 banana
  • ¼ cup fresh or frozen pineapple pieces
  • Pulp of 1 passionfruit
  • ½ mango
  • 4 tbsp Hydrolysed Collagen powder, unflavoured (omit for vegan/ vegetarian option)
  • ¼ cup + 1 tbsp coconut cream

Method

  1. Place ¼ cup coconut cream, half of the banana and 2 tbsp collagen into a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend until smooth. Pour mixture into popsicle tray, approximately quarter way full to make the first layer of the popsicle. Set aside.
  2. Place remaining ingredients into the food processor or high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Fill popsicle tray to the top and place into freezer until completely frozen.
