Work @ Endeavour - Q and A

with Tina Taylor - Contract Lecturer, Naturopathy and Nutritional Medicine

Tina TaylorWhat has been your career path to now?

I graduated from Endeavour College (formerly ACNM) at the beginning of 2008 with a Bachelor of Health Science in both Naturopathy and Nutritional Medicine. Straight after graduating I starting practicing in private practice, and was lucky enough to also work at Endeavour College as a Tutor in the public clinic. Since then I've continued to practice as a Naturopath & Nutritionist in a clinical setting, which has been very rewarding, and my role with the college has grown and changed.

I have been an on campus Lecturer and Tutor in both a permanent part-time and contract positions at different times, teaching various subjects, and supporting students and supervisors in the public clinic.  For almost the last two years I have also enjoyed being part of the online learning department, where I have guided students through their online subjects, and also have worked as a study coach for students doing online studies. I also teach the 'Super Nutrition' short course on campus, and lastly, I've occasionally written articles for various publications, and been on television once or twice!

How is this role more flexible than roles you've had in the past?

Obviously this role differs from a full-time permanent role, however being able to work on campus in a face-to-face environment each semester, and being able to work from home is very enjoyable and different to full-time roles I have had in the past. It works for me at this time, and really is a pleasure, and works in with my family life. Having a child in school, also means I have the flexibility to have more time off over school holidays, once the semesters come to a close.

Has the flexibility of your role with Endeavour enhanced your work life balance and general wellbeing and if so, how?

I feel fulfilled in my career, as I'm working in different areas as a professional in my industry.  I continue to grow and learn in the field of health and education and coming from a previous career in IT, I certainly appreciate the flexibility and diversification contracting has to offer.  I am in a position where I am able to pursue further postgraduate studies and continue in my private practice two days per week. I personally find it is less stressful, and I'm able to balance work and life more easily, and include some 'me' time in there.

What would you say to others considering a contract role?

I would say it has definitely worked for me, and is a worthwhile consideration. It allows an individual to pursue other areas, particularly for practitioners that would like to diversify their income, as well as balance part-time work with being in private practice.  Contracting has provided me an opportunity for social interaction with peers whilst keeping abreast of industry changes.
