Short Description:

This unit provides the student with a sound basic understanding of pharmacology and western drug treatment. It provides students with a western scientific approach to the investigation of medicines that will advance the knowledge of traditional medicines and also act as an introduction to potential drug interactions.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand and analyse the principles underpinning pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.
  2. Compare and contrast the pharmacology of common drug classes.
  3. Develop a coherent argument for the use of specific drug regimens in disease treatments/management.
  4. Critically evaluate how the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics affect treatment and therapeutic dosage.
  5. Conceptualise the potential effects and possible interactions of different drug treatments and within the body.

Assessment:

  1. Mid Semester Take Home Assignment. Week 8. 50%.
  2. Final Exam. Closed book, invigilation required. Exam period. 50%.
