Short Description

This subject continues our exploration of, and increases the knowledge base of human biology gained in HBS1-Human Biological Science 1. It provides students with a further understanding of the maintenance of homeostasis and the characteristics of life: transport, protection, nutrition, storage and elimination. The subject provides students with opportunities to further understand these concepts through the examination of the haematological, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, immune, integumentary, digestive and urinary systems in terms of their components, structure and functions and how these systems integrate to maintain homeostasis within the body. Details of physiology and anatomy are presented to students to provide a comprehensive insight of how these systems work and how they are coordinated within the body to create a functioning whole. This information on the normal functioning of the human body provides a basis on which the pathophysiology of these systems can be taught to give an understanding to clinical medicine and disease.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe and interpret the detailed structure and function of the haematological, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, immune, integumentary, digestive and urinary systems.
  2. Continue to identify and classify the inter-relationship between the structure and function of cells and tissues, to the organs and systems of the human body.
  3. Interpret and analyse the inter-relationship between the lymphatic and immune system and the role they play in the maintenance of health.
  4. Analyse the role of the endocrine system along with the nervous system in the regulation of the body’s homeostasis in relation to the systems named above.
  5. Compare the interrelationship of all body systems to create a functioning whole organism and their contribution to homeostasis.
  6. Apply knowledge of the systems to problem solving clinical issues.

Assessment:

  1. Online Quizzes. Weeks 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. 50%.
  2. Biology Project. Week 13. 20%.
  3. Final Examination Closed book, invigilation required. Exam period. 30%.
