Short Description:

Herbal Medicine 4 continues to explore the application of naturopathic principles and herbal therapeutic strategy to the treatment and management of specific health conditions and selected case studies commenced in Herbal Medicine 3 (HB3). This unit draws on the knowledge obtained from Herbal Medicine 1 (HB1) which is concerned mainly with therapeutic actions and Herbal Medicine 2 (HB2) which is concerned mainly with pharmacognosy, and Human Disease Processes 2 (HDP2). It revises and reinforces from a herbal medicine perspective, the knowledge gained from Wellness Analysis (WELA), History and Philosophy of Natural Medicine (HPNM), and Safe Practices (SPR) and prepares students for Naturopathic Pre-Clinical Skills (NPCS), and Advanced Herbal Medicine (AHM).

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand common disease states associated with selected body systems from a naturopathic perspective, and determine appropriate herbal treatments based on naturopathic principles with consideration to contraindications, posology, possible adverse reactions, interactions with other herbs, drugs, nutrient supplements, foods or xenobiotics.
  2. Conceptualise appropriate therapeutic strategies for the herbal treatment of individual case studies, based on best current practice and/or informed by evidence based research.
  3. Identify the need for on-going sound research for herbal treatment of specific disease states.

  1. Progressive Assignment Part A. Orthodox aetiology and naturopathic assessment. Session 4. 20%.
  2. Progressive Assignment Part B. Treatment goals. Session 7. 10%.
  3. Progressive Assignment Part C. Validity of current prescription. Session 10. 35%
  4. Progressive Assignment Part D. Proposed evidence-based prescription changes. Session 13. 35%.
