Short Description:
This unit, building on the knowledge gained from the units of study Herbal Preparation (HBP), History and Philosophy of Natural Medicine (HPNM) and Foundations of Human Biology (FHUB), provides the foundation knowledge for herbal medicine studies. It discusses the incorporation of naturopathic philosophy and principles in herbal medicine practice, and presents the therapeutic value and application of specified herbs within their therapeutic categories. Traditional use, research findings, possible adverse reactions, drug interactions, toxicity and idiosyncratic effects are included.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand and analyse the therapeutic actions and application of selected commonly used medicinal herbs.
- Compare and contrast commonly used medicinal herbs within the materia medica.
- Develop a coherent argument for the clinical application of specified herbs within their therapeutic categories based on traditional use and informed by research.
- Develop a philosophic approach to the prescribing of herbal medicines in a clinical setting.
- Identify areas of appropriate research needed in the field of herbal medicine.

- Online quiz. Week 4. 15%.
- Comparative Essay. Week 10. 40%.
- Online Final Exam. Week 15. 45%.
