Short Description

This subject aims to provide a conceptual basis for students to understand the inter-relationship between community education and public health. It introduces students to theories/principles, strategies and ethics that apply to the 'new public health' framework. Students are given a working knowledge of diseases/health problems of major public health importance and the opportunity to develop strategies to facilitate health changes through an analysis and evaluation of existing health programs. Health promotion programs are analysed and planning processes evaluated.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify the basic principles and methods of epidemiology and its fundamental importance in public health practice.
  2. Appraise the process of identifying, quantifying, evaluating and managing the health effects of population exposure to various environmental contaminants.
  3. Critically evaluate case study examples of current topical health promotion programs in terms of their theoretical underpinning, the planning model(s) used, implementation strategies and evaluation processes.
  4. Conceptualise and develop strategies to facilitate health change through an understanding of the inter-relationship between social, economic, political structures, cultural and belief systems, lifestyle, health and health behaviour.
