Short Description:

This unit introduces general, physical and organic chemistry and prepares the student for further studies in biochemistry, human biology, nutrition and human disease processes. It also introduces students to the major principles of scientific enquiry and scientific method and is a foundation unit of study for those students who do not have credit for Year 12 chemistry.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Compare and contrast proton, electron and neutrons and discuss the role they play in determining elements, atoms and ions.
  2. Understand, analyse and balance reactions in inorganic and organic chemistry.
  3. Understand the basic gas laws.
  4. Critically evaluate Le Chatelier’s principle and the role it plays in equilibrium.
  5. Conceptualise atoms, molecules, chemical bonding and common reactions of the functional groups of organic chemicals.

Assessment:

  1. Online Mid-Semester Exam: Week 6. 40%.
  2. Final Exam: Closed book, invigilated exam. Exam period. 60%.
