Short Description:
This subject continues on from APP522 in providing students with a deeper understanding of the structure and function of the body’s systems and the disease processes that can affect them. In studying these diseases processes, students explore the effects they have on body systems, understanding the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, and general management of these diseases and the impact these diseases have on the person as a whole. Students will then be able to use this information to plan and deliver appropriate modality specific health care for their clients or recognise the need for referral to other health care practitioners.
Learning Outcomes:
- Using appropriate medical terminology, describe the major components of each body system, their location, inter-relationships and associated pathophysiology.
- Identify factors, internal or external, with the potential to impact on health in general, and the normal functioning of the body.
- Recognise and explain common pathologies affecting the body’s biological systems.
- Understand the likely impact of specific interventions, recognising potential contraindications to treatment.
- Using the above knowledge, be able to plan and deliver appropriate care, or refer for advice, guidance or confirmation if outside scope of practice.
Assessment:
- Online Written tests. Weeks 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8. 80%.
- Assignment. (Research and application). Week 8. 20%.
