Natural medicine education provider Endeavour College of Natural Health today announced it will discount its popular natural health clinic treatments across Australia by 50% to $15 this week as a show of support for Mental Health Week.
"Mental illness is an issue that resonates strongly with us as a natural health educator, as the majority of our natural health graduates are working in conjunction with the conventional medicine industry to treat patients experiencing mental illness," said Director, Admissions and Marketing Endeavour College of Natural Health David Hoey.
"Mental Health Week is the time to remove the stigma of mental illness, and part of that is empowering people to recognise the symptoms and find the best treatment programs. We wanted to play our part by making our natural health treatments even more accessible over this period."
The theme for this year’s Mental Health Week is 'Working Towards Wellbeing' which highlights the need for communities to build resilience and support people in their recovery.
The $15 treatments will be available this week in the Sydney, Perth, Gold Coast, Melbourne. Adelaide and Brisbane clinics. Customers can book their discounted treatment through the website www.endeavourclinics.com.au by quoting reference code "MHW12" or by contacting their local clinic directly and mentioning the offer.
One in five Australians are affected by a mental health condition at some point of their lives. Endeavour College’s pop-up gardens to put a sprig in Sydney’s step

Natural health education provider Endeavour College of Natural Health will today launch an experiential campaign which will see pop-up gardens gifting organic herb starter packs take commuters by surprise across the Sydney CBD this week.
The pop-up gardens will appear daily from October 8 to 12 at various locations within Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and Wynyard Park. An advertising campaign utilising Sydney bus shelters, sidewalks and print outlets will direct people to a mobile site via a QR code which will reveal the location and timing of each day's garden.
“We designed the Endeavour pop-up gardens to plant a seed in people's minds about healthy living and promote the therapeutic properties of herbs in a fun and tangible way," said Endeavour College of Natural Health CEO Carolyn Barker AM.
“We wanted to help Sydneysiders to enjoy all the benefits that come with growing your own produce and to learn more about the herbs used and prescribed by our natural health students and graduates. The campaign is also an interactive way to mark our growing presence in Sydney. We are currently the only college of our type in Sydney offering such a wide variety of degree programs specialising in complementary medicine and wellbeing."
Each Endeavour-branded herb starter pack contains a packet of 100% certified organic herb seeds and soil along with a recipe and booklet detailing the herb's properties and the various Endeavour degrees which incorporate the herb into its teachings. The starter packs will include either mint, chamomile, thyme, rosemary or oregano.
A competition will support the campaign by giving participants the chance to win a year's worth of natural therapy treatments. Entrants must upload a photo of themselves with their starter pack along with a caption to the competition's Facebook page for their chance to win.
The campaign's mobile site will promote Endeavour's upcoming Open Day at its sustainable Sydney campus at 815 George Street on October 14.
The campaign features the tagline “Passion to help, knowledge to heal" and follows a six week brand campaign in Sydney.

Endeavour College Scholarship Program Now Open
Endeavour College of Natural Health is launching a new Scholarship program for study commencing in 2013.
The College is proud to offer eligible school leavers the opportunity to kick-start their career in the Natural Health industry with a year of fully funded course fees at Bachelor level in the modalities of Naturopathy or Nutritional Medicine.
Up to six scholarships may be granted to applicants from each of the College’s campuses located in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.
Applicants will be assessed on academic ability, their passion for the Natural Health industry and their capacity to act as an ambassador for the College.
"There's never been such a high demand in Australia for natural health practitioners and the range of industries employing our professional graduates continues to grow," said Carolyn Barker AM, Endeavour College CEO.
Interested Year 12 students are invited to submit an application before 1 September 2012 Friday 28 September 2012, when suitable candidates will be short-listed. Successful applicants will be notified in mid-October for study to commence on campus on 20 February 2013.

Endeavour statement to students and alumni regarding the 2012 Federal Budget announcement
Many of Endeavour's students and alumni would have watched the recent Federal Budget announcement on television or read the papers regarding the range of initiatives being undertaken by the government to bring the Australian budget into surplus by 2013. One of the areas for consideration is a review of some natural therapy rebates through private health care. As with any announcement that affects an industry or a sector in a new way, there has been much commentary about the impact of this announcement on the various modalities.
Endeavour would like to share the facts to avoid any confusion and have included the statement taken directly from the Federal Government Budget Pack (together with the link to the full document).
The Government will undertake a review of the private health insurance rebate for natural therapies. The review, which will be overseen by the Chief Medical Officer, will examine the evidence of clinical efficacy, cost effectiveness and safety and quality of these natural therapies. Following the completion of the review, the Government will introduce through regulation a list of natural therapies that will continue to receive the private health insurance rebate. Natural therapy treatments not included on this list will no longer be eligible for the rebate. Funding of $1.0 million will be provided to the Department of Health and Ageing in 2012‑13 to undertake the review. The savings for this measure are not for publication (nfp) until the completion of the review.
There have been some media reports which have incorrectly listed therapies that will be included in this review by the panel. At this stage there is no information about who is on the panel (other than the Chair), and the panel’s terms of reference. Neither is there a list of therapies which are “in or out” as can be seen from the budget excerpt in bold above.
Various media are commenting on various modalities including aromatherapy, ear candling, crystal therapy, flower essences, homeopathy, iridology, kinesiology, reiki and rolfing. In another report we discovered the addition of naturopathy. However, at this stage it is important to note this is merely speculation.
In eight months’ time at the conclusion of the review, the selected therapies named by the panel will no longer qualify for subsidy through private healthcare rebates.
As an educator, Endeavour will keep a “watching brief” on the developments and will be very interested in what all associations, and in particular the two largest - ATMS and ANTA (with a collective membership of over 15,000) release in relation to this matter. We encourage our students and alumni to look to Endeavour for updates on this matter as we will keep across the upcoming Federal Government announcements and will make these available to you in a timely manner.
For instance, ATMS recently released this statement, “The one thing that members can be confident of is that the ATMS will be arguing the case on behalf of our members to the Government, Opposition, minor parties and independents in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. We will be arguing passionately about the need to maintain the existing arrangements that will ensure the services mooted as being targeted continue to be eligible for the health insurance rebate.”

MST student wins a coveted 2012 ANTA Bursary Award
Bachelor of Health Science (MST) third year student Elizabeth Tobin, 40 was recently granted a highly sought after 2012 Bursary Award from the Australian Natural Therapies Association. Elizabeth was selected as a winner on the merits of the literature review she submitted about the properties of fascia, a structure of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels and nerves which binds some structures together while helping others glide smoothly over each other.
Elizabeth plans to put her $1,000 ANTA Bursary towards the start-up costs associated with becoming a practicing MST professional.
The ANTA National Bursaries were established to encourage students to maximize the opportunities provided in their education and assist them to achieve their aims and goals in natural therapies. Since the launch of the ANTA National Bursary Awards program, the organization has provided $50,000 in bursaries to students to help them reach the pinnacle of their profession. ANTA grants ten $1,000 grants to students enrolled in courses recognized by ANTA each year.
Enrolments now open for Bachelor of Health Science (Musculoskeletal Therapy)
Endeavour College is now accepting enrolments for Bachelor of Health Science (Musculoskeletal Therapy) in its Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney campuses.
Musculoskeletal Therapy (MST) treats symptoms, relieves pain, and identifies and addresses contributing factors and underlying causes of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
It involves an extensive physical evaluation and an integrated therapeutic approach in the treatment of affected muscles, joints and nerves.
MST uses standard methods of assessment such as postural evaluation, neurological and functional testing to determine the particular cause of musculoskeletal pain and associated dysfunction. It alleviates muscle contracture caused by trauma, ageing, overload or misuse of muscles. Such contractures may arise from postural dysfunction, occupational, sporting and recreational activities or mechanical disorders such as excessive spinal curvatures.
The Bachelor of Health Science (MST) is a three-year degree which provides a comprehensive theoretical foundation in biomedical and clinical sciences as is standard in most health science degrees. The Musculoskeletal Therapist is trained in the development of communication and management skills including an appreciation of legal and ethical issues that may arise in a clinical setting. Manual skills are core to MST training and are used in the exploration and evaluation of joint restriction and the contractile state of specific muscles.

Endeavour College students helping heart and lung surgery patients make a better recovery
Since Endeavour College teamed with Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital to launch an Australian-first acute care massage service to help heart and lung patients in April 2011, the program has become an entrenched and respected part of the hospital’s Cardiothoracic ward.
The massage program is staffed by third year musculoskeletal therapy students from Endeavour College, who complete a portion of their clinical hours in this placement. They work alongside physiotherapists and nursing staff to design a massage treatment targeted specifically to each patient’s needs.
“In less than twelve months our clinic has helped 250 heart and lung surgery patients make more comfortable recoveries and reduced their stress and pain levels during the critical post-surgical period,” said Endeavour College of Natural Health Director of Education Dr Nick Vardaxis.
“Through the clinic we have developed excellent relationships with the hospital’s physiotherapists who are increasingly referring their patients to our therapists to support their recovery. It is an excellent example of what is possible when complementary and conventional medicine work hand in hand to facilitate the best possible patient care,” Dr Vardaxis said.
“The clinic has certainly stimulated interest from other areas of the hospital and we hope to see it expand to support as many patients as possible.”
The clinic is managed by Lisa Casanelia, a Senior Lecturer at Endeavour College of Natural Health. It is an initiative of the Integrative Medicine Education and Research Group introduced at the Hospital lead by Dr Lesley Braun and Professor Frank Rosenfeldt.
“It has been most gratifying to see our student therapists help recovering heart and lung surgery patients achieve greater mobility and reduced anxiety and pain through the use of massage. We have even been able to support carers of critically ill patients who have had to relocate or commute long distances, massage has been able to help reduce their stress levels,” said Ms Casanelia.
The launch of this clinic follows ground-breaking Australian research conducted by Dr Braun and Professor Rosenfeldt from the Alfred Hospital which showed massage was of great benefit in reducing pain, anxiety and tension levels in heart surgery patients.

Endeavour College upgrades to new Brisbane campus
Endeavour College has moved to an improved Brisbane campus located at 269 Wickham Street, Fortitude Valley for the start of the 2012 academic year, reflecting the continued growth of the College.
“We considered a number of potential sites for the new campus, and our final decision was based on offering the best possible educational experience for students,” Endeavour Learning Group CEO Carolyn Barker said.
“The Wickham Street campus offers our students greatly improved facilities and resources.”
“It is closer to public transport and there will be better equipped classrooms, dedicated student zones, more practical areas and improved clinic learning spaces.”
Ms Barker said there were also a larger library and a state-of-the-art laboratory. The building features sustainable building practices such as sensor lighting and recycled building materials, which reflects the College’s commitment to sustainability.
The new facility will bring academic teaching staff and student services into one central location to facilitate student contact with staff. The new campus is close to a post office, ATM facilities, the Valley swimming pool, cafes and restaurants.
Endeavour to mobilise interest in Upgrade Homeopathy and Degree Programs
Low levels of enrolment activity this year in Endeavour’s Bachelor of Health Science (Homeopathy) degree has meant that the College is not in a position to accept an intake into its Semester 1 2012 Higher Education program.
Those students currently enrolled in a Bachelor degree will continue to receive a quality education as they progress through their three and half year qualification without interruption. Additionally Endeavour has created an upgrade pathway especially for those practitioners who currently hold an Advanced Diploma from any institution in Australia.
Endeavour’s Homeopathy Department plans to engage in outreach activities to raise positive awareness of homeopathy as a professional pathway during the 2012 calendar year, in order to stimulate interest in enrolment in Semester 1 2013. The awareness program will include a presence at school career days, conferences and expos, improved informational materials about the course and profession, and online seminars on related topics hosted by the College’s own academic experts in the field.
In 2011 the College brought two of the world’s leading Homeopathic experts, Dr Stephan Baumgartner and Dr Gustavo Bracho, to Australia for a national seminar tour presenting their research into homeopathy as a healthcare system and homeopathic immunisation respectively. We encourage the homeopathic profession in Australia to join us in actively promoting this qualification to prospective students both at entry level (as school leavers), as career changers, as well as those already qualified in allied health professions such as nursing and counselling.
The College has invested in homeopathic education in Australia at both Advanced Diploma and Bachelor levels over the past five years. Having purchased several small Registered Training Organisations that offered Advanced Diplomas in different parts of the country, Endeavour also developed the first accredited Bachelor of Health Science (Homeopathy) degree in Australia following guidelines from the Australian Register of Homeopaths (AROH).
In addition, we have developed a one year upgrade pathway for practitioners who currently hold an Advanced Diploma qualification.
