Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a system of long gliding strokes, kneading, friction, percussion, vibration and shaking motions that apply gentle pressure between to the muscles of the body. Swedish massage is a flowing and relaxing technique that aims to soothe the nervous system and reduce generalised muscle tension and stress.

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Some other benefits include shortening recovery time from muscular strain, increased circulation without increased heart load, stretching of ligaments and tendons, skin stimulation and soothing of the nervous system. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested as part of a regular program for stress management.

Assessment and treatment of specific injury or conditions is beyond the scope of this level practitioner and clients may be referred to the remedial or musculoskeletal therapy clinics when complex conditions are presented.

This is the first clinic students complete in their studies and they are extremely competent in providing a Swedish relaxation massage. A Swedish massage treatment will involve a basic health history assessment and the application of massage techniques to generalised areas of the body. The gliding nature of the Swedish massage techniques involves the application of oil directly to the skin and a level of undress will be required. Clients can be assured that strict draping protocols are observed to ensure modesty and warmth are maintained.
