Remedial massage students are at the beginning stages of learning more advanced assessment techniques based on range of motion and postural observations. The nature of their treatments will be more focused than the Swedish massage clinics and they will use a wider range of soft tissue techniques to affect the deeper layers of muscle, fascia and soft tissues.
The Remedial massage students will use the gliding Swedish massage techniques as a foundation to warm and flush the tissues in combination with more advanced techniques that focus target muscles more specifically. The advanced soft tissue techniques aim to locate and repair damage and to support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. The massage is applied directly to the skin which ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder are deeply penetrated. Passive stretching moves are also used.
Sessions usually take 90 minutes and include a structural assessment that may take up to a half hour. The assessment forms an important part of the treatment and will require movement of joints and postural observations to asses function and dysfunction. The results of any assessment form an important part of designing appropriate treatment plans for effective outcomes. As oil is used, it is necessary for the client to be unclothed for the treatment and appropriate draping will be applied.
