Dating back to approx. 2500BC, there is evidence that Reflexology was used as a preventative health measure. Many different cultures around the world, believed that by massaging the feet and maintaining good foot health, they would consequently also maintain strong physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. It is a truly holistic therapy.
Reflexologists believe all the organs, glands and parts of the body are represented with reflex points on the feet, hands and ears. By stimulating these areas using specific techniques, there will be a direct effect on the corresponding organ.
As reflexology is a holistic therapy, practitioners do not treat specific conditions, but rather work all the systems of the body through the feet every session. It is believed the body will take from the treatment exactly what it needs to bring itself back into balance.
Reflexology is useful for assisting and strengthening all the body systems but is especially beneficial for Hormonal and Reproductive conditions, Digestive, Cardiovascular, Respiratory conditions and Muscular / Skeletal conditions.
Treatment sessions last for 1 1/2 hours, with direct palpation lasting approx 11/4 hours.
Specific personalised treatment plans are developed for each client, under the close supervision of a lecturer. The treatment starts with a reflexology footbath, and lie face up fully clothed on a massage table during the consultation. Many clients fall into a state of deep relaxation or sleep during a session.
During the course, students are exposed to a wide variety of different practical experiences and taught many specialised techniques. This includes Asian reflexology, Hand reflexology, Auricular therapy (ear reflexology), Somatic Reflex therapy, and also specialised Maternity techniques, where quite often both the mother and baby respond positively to the treatment.
Reflexology can be likened to a tune up in a car or an internal body massage. Clients do not need to have a health condition in order to benefit from reflexology.
