President, Alumni Advisory Committee

A message from Camilla Agustin BHScMST, President, Alumni Advisory Committee

Camilla

I am a graduate of the Bachelor of Health Science (Musculoskeletal Therapy) course and currently work within my specialist field at Darling Corner Osteopathy based in Melbourne.

I was drawn to Natural Therapies when I realized from my own experience, how different complementary therapies can impact greatly on the body as a whole. I saw myself working in health care that was patient orientated and discovering Musculoskeletal Therapy ticked off all the boxes that I saw myself pursuing.

The practice of Musculoskeletal Therapy is patient based, hands-on and most importantly holistic. After commencing the course I was at first overwhelmed - new terminology, new concepts, new experiences, a whole different environment. The concepts came together and a big factor for me was having the ability to practice within the Student Clinic offered by Endeavour College. It helped to put the theory into practice in a very real and accessible way.

It has been great promoting my field to new and returning patients. It has allowed me to implement the assessment and management procedures to MST injury, dysfunction and disability. Experiencing clinical practice since graduating has been challenging, however at the same time rewarding. Developing interpersonal skills and communication with different walks of life has been all part of the fulfilling experience.

Endeavour provided the opportunity to undertake a placement at Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre, working with physiotherapists to implement treatments to patients within the amputee, brain and spinal injury units. I was fortunate to be involved in providing massage at multiple events involving the College such as the Sydney International Natural Medicine Conference, Foster care week, mental awareness week, College open days, as well as providing awareness through a presentation to the Careers association of disabled individuals and speaking to High school students about the MST course.

I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a research study with senior lecturer, Lisa Casanelia and Director of Education, Dr. Nick Vardaxis, at the Alfred Hospital, delivering massage to post-operative Cardio-Thoracic patients in the Cardiac Wellness Study in hope that this may change opportunities for Natural Medicine Therapists within a Hospital setting.

The College has made my three years of study memorable and these experiences have been eye-openers. Having the privilege to speak on behalf of the students at the 2010 Endeavour College Graduation Ceremony, I am excited to represent current and past students through the Alumni Advisory Committee.

The Alumni Advisory Committee and the team at Endeavour College have an exciting program planned for 2011 and we are eager to hear your feedback in 2011 and beyond.
